D'deridex "Warbird" Class      Battle-Cruiser      Romulan Empire

CLICK ABOVE TO SEE A DOUBLE-SIZE BLUEPRINT

AT THE TIME THE NEXT GENERATION OFFICER'S MANUAL WAS WRITTEN, the exact size of the warbird must not have hit home with the FASA writers.  The stats for the A and B types indicate a ship roughly equal to the Galaxy class.  But even in ST:TNG First Season we get glamour shots of the D'deridex positioned in the distance, with the NCC-1701-D in the foreground, and the D'deridex obviously dwarfs the Galaxy class.  Given the ship's apparent size, and its proposed quantum black hole power source, I think it's safe to say the stats originally provided by FASA are totally off the mark.  I have therefore included three new types of my own devising which make the class more formidable during FASA combat gameplay.  It is, after all, the most advanced Romulan design of ST:TNG—excluding the Norexan/Valdore and Reman battleships we witness in the final Picard film.
The D'daridex has got to be one of the most gorgeous ship designs to emerge from the ST:TNG series.  At least as elegant and organic looking as the Galaxy class, and far cooler looking than the old teardrop shaped Bird of Prey ship from ST:TOS.  Sadly, this is about the only Romulan ship we ever see in ST:TNG or DS9.  The entire Romulan fleet seems to be composed of nothing but D'daridex class ships—again, excluding the designs seen in the "Nemesis" film.
In 2020 I finally got around to cleaning up a fairly good-sized scan of the old Star Trek: The Magazine blueprints.  The toughest part was the bow, since placement, size, and aspect of different small components didn't align between the various views.  And there's precious little to tell us what the underside of the "hooked beak" looks like.  I did the best I could.  Ultimately, the warp nacelles came out thicker (which seems appropriate for a ship this gargantuan) and the windows/decks were proportioned to the Excelsior class, at the same scale.  Which reduced the total number of decks by a few, but the overall effect of tremendous size is retained.  All in all, a worthwhile project.
